A great piece of breweriana - a  highly decorative antique cooper's croze and bung borer from the former Steward and Patteson Brewery in Norwich.  Originally known as the Anchor Brewery, the business was transformed when it was taken over by John Patteson in 1793.  Ambitious from the start, he went on to acquire a number of other local breweries and public houses, and formed partnership with the Steward family in 1820.  By the time of the Licensing Act of 1930, the company controlled 120 pubs, nearly all of which were in Norwich.  The cooper's croze was a specialised plane used to form the slot that holds the top and bottom of a (beer) barrel/cask in place.  These particular examples have beautiful patina and are nicely carved with the name 'STEWARD Ltd' and 'S & P Ltd'.   Also included is an unopened box of plane irons, a photograph of the Barrack Street Works and a cooper's bung borer, also believed to be from the same works.
